The surreal, moonlit scene unfolds as good friend and fellow lava junkie, Gary Sleik, and I watch a lobe of lava flow down his driveway toward his home. Knowing the inevitable is about to happen, he turns to me with tears in his eyes and says, “I couldn’t have asked for anything more than this… a beautiful moonlit night… a beautiful finger of pahoehoe… “ Within a few hours, Gary’s home was completely destroyed by the lava. The irony of nature couldn’t have been more apparent in that moment, because as destructive as it is, there is so much beauty in this creative force… AND, the resiliency of the human spirit is no more evident in this as well, as Gary has returned and rebuilt his home, and enjoying life in the middle of a lava field!
