  • ‘Ama‘u
  • Blue Velvet
  • A huge, lava bubble explodes, sending sheets of expanding molten rock airborne. These extremely rare episodes are created when trapped superheated steam violently escapes from beneath the river of lava.
    Boom.
  • Kilauea's east rift zone: The discharge channel from fissure 8 rages with swift flowing lava, feeding into the perched channel within the Leilani Estates subdivision.
    Breath of Fire
  • Earth's Fabric.jpg
  • Pahoehoe flows over an existing sea cliff at Kupapa‘u, creating a new delta below as it enters the ocean. Glow radiating from the lava reflects off the rising steam plume in subtle pastel shades.
    Edge of Creation
  • Kilauea's east rift zone: Fountains at fissure 22 fed massive rivers of pahoehoe that stretched to the sea, consuming everything in its path.
    Fissure Fountains
  • Friday, June 22, 2018, 5:45am- Kilauea's east rift zone overflight. The heavy cloud and rain over the eruption zone, resulted in a rainbow and a steamy landscape.

  • Free Fall
  • Glowing bits of lava are pulled seaward by the receding surf in the mesmerizing interaction of molten rock and the cool Pacific. A display of pahoehoe dripping into the sea at the Kamokuna ocean entry creates the newest land on the planet.

  • The Milky Way and moon glow brightly in the sky above the fiery pit of Halema'uma'u, as a meteor streaks through the heavenly scene

  • Kapoho Sunset
  • A finger of pahoehoe pushes its way to the ocean’s edge and begins dripping over a 30 foot cliff at Kupapa‘u, forever altering the Kalapana seacoast.

  • The beautiful blossom of the uncommon Yellow Ohia Lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) is a local favorite. Occurring in red, orange, and yellow, the endemic ohia is one of the main sources of food for the native Hawaiian honeycreepers.
    Lehua Mamo
  • A dripping inferno illuminates the rising steam at the Waikupanaha ocean entry, while forever altering the rugged Kalapana coastline.
    Luminosity
  • Seeping methane burns a bright blue as lava advances through a forest on a moonlit night. Decomposing vegetation beneath the molten flow creates extremely volatile pockets of the highly flammable gas, and when ignited by the intense heat, powerful explosions can result. A close call earlier in the evening had me shaking in my boots as I setup to shoot this scene...with the strong scent of methane in the air, I was scrambling and running for cover every time a huge explosion rocked the area.
    Methane Moon
  • Molten lava pours from a tube, into the sea, creating the newest black sand beach on the planet. An accumulation of this fresh sand and rubble is what supports the new land created by the flow, leading to its very unstable nature. A VERY close call preceded the taking of this shot!
    Molten Drip
  • Spectacular littoral explosions at the Waikupunaha entry, toss ejecta more than 200 feet into the air, rapidly adding to the buildup of an impressive oceanside cone during this moonlit Kalapana evening.
    Moonlit Splendor
  • Kilauea's east rift zone: Although lower in height today, vigorous fountaining fed lava into the perched channel system from fissure 8.
    New Reality
  • A honu, or Hawaiian green sea turtle, basks on the warm black sand at Punalu‘u. One of the few marine turtles that venture onshore for reasons other than nesting, the honu is considered endangered, as exploitation as a food and ornamentation source decimated their numbers across the globe. Protection by the US Endangered Species Act and International Union for the Conservation of Nature have helped their numbers recover in Hawaii, but populations in other parts of the world still face a serious threat.

  • Ribbons in the Sky.jpg
  • Vigorous activity at the Kupapa'u ocean entry in Kalapana.

  • Temporary Solitude.jpg
  • Lava exits a tube and flows into the sea, creating another new black sand beach and delta of land, forever altering the Big Island's coastline. This truly remarkable and dynamic scene is mesmerizing to witness, let alone shoot. Shoes: $175. Tripod: $950. Getting the shot: Priceless.
    Terra Not So Firma
  • A tongue of viscous pahoehoe breaks through its recently cooled crust. The silica contained within, reflects the early morning sunlight, giving its surface a glassy sheen.
    The Tongue
  • Lava pours out of a tube at the ocean's edge, creating a surreal, colorful and steamy scene, as the dynamic Kalapana coastline is altered forever.
    Tranquillity
  • A finger of lava gracefully cascades into the sea at the Waikupanaha ocean entry, while its glow radiates warm pastel shades in the rising steam plume.

“On an early morning shoot at the Waikupanaha ocean entry, lava from Kilauea volcano poured into the sea, creating a huge steam plume that rose with such velocity, it generated multiple vortices as it billowed upward into the sky. A vortex or two is a rare sight... but when one after another kept forming, my fumbling with the lenses turned into a panicked rush to switch to my wide angle to be able to capture this incredible scene of seven vortices in a row!”
