Resting Honu
Resting Honu
A honu, or Hawaiian green sea turtle, basks on the warm black sand at Punalu‘u. One of the few marine turtles that venture onshore for reasons other than nesting, the honu is considered endangered, as exploitation as a food and ornamentation source decimated their numbers across the globe. Protection by the US Endangered Species Act and International Union for the Conservation of Nature have helped their numbers recover in Hawaii, but populations in other parts of the world still face a serious threat.
