Update on what is going on with the Lava Flow down in Kalapana.  On January 3rd, the lava stopped flowing into the ocean, and since then it has been going through deflation-inflation cyles, or DI events, which has made the volume of lava inconsistent.  A few times, the amount of inflation was huge but not long enough to push it back down into the ocean....

Recently, we made an attempt to visit Pele as she made her way down the pali (cliff).  It has been over two months since our last journey out to the flow and being out of shape really kicked our butts.  Only a few times and one in particular made me realize how old Bruce is….okay, me too.  This hike was one of them and not as bad but we suffered the old man syndrome afterwards.

It was a very spiritual time for us to be in the mist of Pele once again, even though it was a small flow.  The feeling is still strong as we once again create the bond that we have with her.  We are truly blessed that she has allowed us to be in her presence to witness something very beautiful and powerful.  It was worth the hike and consequences (aches and pains) that followed.

As of the moment, the lava supply has been feeding a few active surface flows above the pali.
